Is Vaping Safe?

With all the recent news and hysteria surrounding vaping it can be difficult to find reliable information. There are many misconceptions falsely attributed to vaping so hopefully we can answer a few common questions and concerns you may have, whether you are new to the scene, a current vaper, or a non-vaper looking for some information. Before you continue, it is worth keeping some key points in mind as you read through.

Key Points

  • There are over four thousand known poisons present in cigarette smoke including cyanide and lead.
  • Over 50 of these poisons are also known carcinogens (Cancer Causing)
  • Of the 7.4 million smokers in the UK, 60% attempt to quit annually. Only 5% of these will attempt to quit through vaping. Nicotine replacement therapy has a success rate of only 23% and success rates for going cold turkey are even lower. Vaping has twice the success rate as NRT in helping people quit smoking long-term.
  • Drugs used in NRT have negative side-effects. Studies of the NRT drug Champix (varenicline) have shown that users are susceptible to hallucinations, aggression and suicide.

A problem in youth?

The “youth vaping epidemic” is largely overstated in the UK. Whilst in the USA, poor regulation has led to a significant uptake in young people vaping, with an estimated 15% of high-schoolers admitting to having used an e-cigarette at some point. The situation is very different in the UK. Thorough regulatory bodies as well as European Union TPD regulations have ensured that vaping stays in the hands of only those who need it. Theories which presume sweet and dessert-like flavours to be at fault for appealing to a young audience have been largely debunked. It is not youth that are being targeted by these flavors, but vapers in general.

Are there dangerous chemicals in electronic cigarettes or e-liquid?

When reports are released through the news and journalism, it is not uncommon for the news outlet to claim in the headlines that “e-liquid causes…” and fail to elaborate on why or how the e-liquid or electronic-cigarette caused problems for the user. With e-liquids, any juice purchased from a TPD compliant, reputable vendor is never going to cause any sort of issues or complications we often see in news headlines. It is unfortunate that these rare cases get as much attention as they do. Every time there has been a news report where somebody has become ill as a result of vaping, it is due to the e-liquid being purchased from unlicensed (and therefore unregulated) vendors. E-Liquid is made with pharmaceutical grade ingredients with an accompanying MSDS (Material safety data sheet).

All ingredients found in your juices can be found in ordinary household ketchup, generally Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, flavourings and nicotine. For the device itself, or the electronic cigarette, the circumstances leading to device failure can vary. It is common in high profile cases where people have ended up in hospital that the individual has not followed the best practice for safety for the batteries in their kit. Electronic cigarettes are held to the same standard as any other electronic device such as a mobile phone. So, it follows that provided the user exhibits the same standard of care that they do for their other electronics, there will never be an issue.

Isn’t nicotine dangerous?

Whilst the nicotine in cigarettes is the primary contributor to addiction, it is also no more dangerous than caffeine on its own. Some papers even question the addictiveness of nicotine outside of cigarette smoke.

Does second hand vapour carry any risk?

No research has shown evidence that second hand vapor carries a risk to others near the vaper.

How much safer is it?

Public Health England (PHE) have stated that vaping is approximately 95% safer than smoking. This is agreed by Cancer Research UK and is accepted by the NHS. NHS UK are highly proactive in the promotion of vaping as a smoking cessation tool.

In Summary

Vaping does not produce smoke, tar or the 4000 known poisonous chemicals produced by cigarettes. They provide the option of reducing the nicotine levels over time to provide a soft and gradual means of alleviating dependency. The entire industry is highly regulated to ensure that you, the customer, have access to only the highest quality juices made from pharmaceutical grade ingredients. Vaping has been subject to severe scrutiny over the last ten years with no severe risk being found. You can regain your sense of taste and smell, clear your lungs and get fitter. If you are a smoker who is on the fence about vaping due to concerns, we hope that you found this a helpful summary of the positive impact switching over to vaping could have on your life.
