Voopoo Drag Max Review: Metal Meets Leather

Hello everybody, Josh here with an in-depth review on the latest edition to the Drag family by Voopoo

The Voopoo Drag line has been around for some time now, and is a device that has done excellently since it's first launch. We've seen a lot of different renditions of the Drag series and now it's time for something new!

When the original Drag S and Drag X pod kits were introduced they re-invented the way we think about pod kits in general. Back before the PnP pod tank was released, pod kits were still believed to be fully aimed towards beginner vapers and as a perfect aid to help those wanting to quit smoking.

Now pod kits seem to be the new leading vaping device category within the industry with all manufactures jumping into the new world with no obvious signs of it slowing down anytime soon!

So without looking too much into the past, let's focus onto the future ahead of us with the latest Drag Max Kit by leading vaping manufacturer giant Voopoo.

This in-depth review will leave no stone unturned as we fully evaluate to see if this bridge between the Drag X/S and Argus GT is the perfect new pod kit that belongs in your pocket!...

What's in the Box:

The Drag Max kit comes with everything you'll be used to from Voopoo, nothing massively fancy; The box and packaging has all you'll need to get going.. besides a couple of rechargeable 18650 batteries, which of course you can get from Royal Flush Vape if you don't have any lying around!

Voopoo Drag Max Device - First Impressions:

voopoo-drag-max-first-impressions

First impressions are sometimes the most important when it comes to a review. Although I like to use this as a heading, you'll find a lot more than basic first observations in this section. See below as we take apart the Drag Max kit (hypothetically) and see what it's really about!

Design

Upon first unboxing the Drag Max, you can tell straight of the bat that this is a Drag product through and through. The device doesn't seem particularly flush on the outside, with its boxy square edges it feels familiar to the early days of sub-ohm kits.

By adding room for an additional 18650 battery, the depth has obviously increased when compared with the Drag X but not extravagantly. This additional depth has allowed for the leather padding to run further around the back of the device with the signature DRAG stamped into the leather.

The metal finishes throughout the device seem to be matte black which gives the device a great overall finish and feel however be carful as this can sometimes show up scratched a little easier if that bothers you.

Fire Button:

The large circle fire button on the Drag Max is perfectly placed to allow for an ergonomic hold. The button is clicky enough but not over the top; If you've used any other product from Voopoo then expect what you're used to.

Type-C Charging:

You'll be pleased to know that Voopoo have continued there adoption of Type-C charging allowing for your device to be ready to go a lot quicker!

USB-C seems the new normal within the vaping industry as it follows suit with other electrical manufactures. As this becomes more normal it'll be less of a selling point, but for now many will be pleased to hear about it.

Battery & Door Placement:

Voopoo have continued the trend of the push slide kind of battery door you'll find on many other sub-ohm kits available on the market. This is personally my favourite type of battery door as there's no struggling to ply off a magnet supported door and it just gets the job done.

The Drag Max kit takes 2x 18650 batteries which slot in easily once the battery door is open. Within the door, there are clear enough labels for battery terminals and I never had any type of battery connection issues whilst testing the device.

Display & Navigation:

With a decent sized colour display located below the firing button, all text you'd look for are clearly displayed including current wattage, puff counter and time alongside current coil ohm and voltage.

The menu is nice and bright and clear enough in the sun, even though this was hard to measure and test in the sunny North West in October!

The front of the device also includes two clicky buttons slightly smaller than the fire button for up/down wattage adjustment and other handy features highlighted below:

Menu & Operation

To get the most out for the Voopoo Drag Max kit, there are a few button sequences that are handy to know:

Fire button five times (in quick concession) = Lock/unlock device.

Fire button three times (in quick concession) = Switch between Smart and RBA mode. (Basically beginner and advanced modes)

Up button = Scroll wattage up

Down button = Scroll wattage down

Hold up/down buttons = Choose between display options

Fire and up buttons together = lock/unlock device (all buttons)

Fire and down button = Reset puff count

Hold all three buttons = Display chipset ID

PnP Pod - First Impressions:

voopoo-drag-max-pod-tank

There isn't really much of a 'first impressions' for me personally with the PnP pod as I've reviewed the majority of Voopoo products and since their introduction of the PnP pod tank, all the latest Voopoo vape kits seem to include their PnP and rightly so!

To briefly highlight my review on the PnP, The Voopoo PnP coils when combined with variable wattage create one of the most superb flavours I have every tasted on a pod kit or sub-ohm kit!

The mesh coils being one of my favourite as they provide a full mouth watering flavour whilst also creating a great deal of vapour at the same time.

Voopoo Drag Max Vape Review:

Although the standard Drag Max kit comes with the two coils as highlighted, there are seven different coil types which can be used with the PnP in the Drag Max including an RBA coil.

To keep things on track and without expanding this already lengthy review, I will include the two coils included below and possibly create a full in-depth blog/review on all the coils compatible with the PnP. Let us know in the comments below if this is something you'd love to see!

PnP-VM5 0.20ohm Coil (Mesh)

The VM5 coil comes with recommended use at 40W-60W. I used Grape Berry by The Stuff for this test. Starting between 5W-10W, the coil brings through enough vapour for a little cloud however not much flavour at this wattage range.

At around 20W there was a decent cloud which really stood out to me for something as low as 20W. In addition the flavour really began to come through.

When getting to the bottom end of the recommendations from Voopoo, 32W really began to start a wonderful flavour journey. The berries and grape infused together to create a well rounded and pleasant vape however once again vapour production is rather low.

I then pushed the boundaries testing up to 60W and was very happy when I did! The cloud created was definitely a lot larger, and even better, the flavour didn't change for the worse either, especially with the additional strain on the coil.

I ended up finding my perfect balance at the top of the scale around 50W. The flavour was well rounded and the vapour production was more than enough.

PnP-VM6 0.15ohm (Mesh) Included

Coming with a recommended wattage setting of 60W-80W and 10mg of nicotine or less, the VM6 coil has true potential to kick out some great flavour.

To keep the testing fair, I continued to use the higher VG e-liquid; Grape Berry by The Stuff at a mixed level of 3mg nicotine.

I began testing at the lower ends of 5W to get the coil breaking in and not surprisingly nothing really came from it.

All the way up to around 15W there is the same flavour lacking vape until it really starts to begin.

It wasn't until around 40W that the amazing flavour really started to come through! The grape and berries really infused wonderfully together for a very decent vape with a rather impressive cloud.

At 60W the flavour really came to life, after all it is the bottom end of the recommended area from Voopoo. From the initial fire to the end, I got a constant and beautifully created flavour throughout. With a huge cloud although nothing in comparison to higher up the scale.

At the maximum recommendation of 80W the vapour production was very impressive, I got a very large thick cloud, however you do lose that little bit of flavour compared to 60W. This is why I found the sweet spot for this coil directly in the middle at 70W.

Refilling the Pod:

voopoo-drag-max-refilling

If you haven't used one before, refilling the PnP pod is very easy:

  • Pull Plastic Pod Section From Base
  • Remove Rubber Plug at Base of Pod
  • Add Your Favourite E-Liquid From Royal Flush Vape
  • Place Back Together Same Way You Took Apart
  • Wait Around 5 Minutes For Adequate Saturation

Final Thoughts:

voopoo-drag-max-final-thoughts

The Voopoo Drag Max kit really does bridge the Drag X, Drag S and the Argus GT by finding the perfect middle ground that many will be delighted to see! With the addition of another battery slot over the Drag X  you'll get a lot more power options or battery life in general and without the additional weight weighing you down when compared to the Argus GT.

The Drag Max kit is perfect for those wanting to find the middle ground pod kit that has everything included from the get go without fully overcomplicating anything.

This kit is something I would even possibly consider recommending to semi-beginner vapours who know there basic ways around and want something with a little more option.
