Hello everybody, Josh here with another product from Smok, the SCAR-P3. This is the the latest pod kit from Smok and comes alongside the SCAR-P5 which is pretty much identical but with a removable 18650 battery as opposed the inbuilt 2000mAh battery we see with the P3.
Smok have been bringing out a lot of pod kits these days, and to be fair most other leading manufacturer seems to be doing the same. But with so many new releases, what makes the SCAR-P3 any better than their predecessors and/or rivals?...
Capacity – 2ml (TPD Compliant)
Coil Resistance – 0.2ohm - 2.5ohm
Output Wattage – 5W - 80W
Dimensions – 110mm x 32.3mm x 27mm
Weight - 105g
Power - Internal 2000mAh Battery
Display - Colour LCD Screen
On unboxing the SCAR-P3 pod kit out of the typical Smok packaging, the first impressions are with the build quality. The kit differs to what you may be used to seeing with Smok, with a matt black rubber coating alongside gunmetal finishing creating a very sleek design. The reason behind this new rubber look is due to the SCAR-P3 being fully IP67 waterproof and dustproof, much like with their competitor Geekvape and their Aegis series.
Besides the additional rubber coating and padding, the SCAR-P3 does look rather similar to their previous RPM 2 series pod kits but definitely has a greater quality feel all round with obvious additional protection.
With this additional rubber, holding the device has a lot more grip alongside the extra padding providing a very comfortable hold. What makes this kit more appealing is that with all this robustness and sturdy feel, alongside IP67 technologies, the kit only weighs in at 105g!
Although there is a lot of additional rubber coating and padding, especially in comparison to their previous devices such as the RPM2, the SCAR-P3 is still very clean throughout with all buttons being easily accessible and responsive with a decent click on press with little to no rattling at all.
In addition, the layout of the colour LCD display is very clear and not as overcrowded as we are seeing with other devices on the market today. The readouts are slightly smaller than previous devices however nothing to really mark them down for. Although some may see it as a negative, the display does not include coloured themes you may be used to with Smok products, although I personally think this eliminated distraction from the layout which I'm all for.
The airflow on the SCAR-P3 is unfortunately non adjustable so if you are looking for a tighter draw this may not be the device for you, although saying this, the coils perform well with this limitation (see coil review below).
As the SCAR-P3 is a newer pod kit, Smok have included Type-C charging capabilities which I'm sure will please the majority. With a maximum charging rate of 5V 1.1A the device definitely charges fast and with the 200mAh battery it should last you throughout the day.
If you've used a Smok pod kit before then the controls and user interface will be something you are used to; With 5 clicks of the fire button to turn the device on/off and 3 clicks to lock the device being fired. Furthermore, holding the down and fire button together locks the wattage output with the fire button and up changing the colour of the display.
Smok have really adapted their latest technologies with the IQ-80 chipset which not only provides a great all round vape but also includes multiple levels of protection:
So with all the added benefits including IP67 protection and IQ-80 chipset, how does the SCAR-P3 perform, is it just another reboot of their predecessors or is there a lot more to this pod kit?...
The SCAR-P3 pod utilises two new designed pods which use the same coils found with their RPM 2 series however the pod differs slightly as mentioned earlier, most noticeably with their top fill design.
SCAR-P3 RPM 2 Pod - Meshed 0.16ohm Coil
The SCAR-P3 RPM 2 pod comes with a the 0.16ohm mesh coil already installed. Smok recommend a wattage setting between 25W-50W with the best being stated at 40W. Just like with the RPM 2, Smok state this coil is aimed for Direct To Lung (DTL) vaping, to my delight.
For the tests I ensured I used the same e-liquid for both coils for a fair review. I opted for Strawberry Jam and began testing at the lower end of the recommended wattage around 25W. Upon first impressions, there was definite flavour there although there was obvious signs for improvement. 25W provided a pleasant vape but wasn't excellent.
Jumping up to the recommended wattage of 40W, there was a definite increase in flavour! At this setting I got a mouth filling pleasant vape and could fully distinguish between the strawberry and jam on the exhale. The flavour production was also massively increased but not overpowering.
50W was where I found my particular sweet spot, the quick fire of the Strawberry Jam fills the mouth for a full dense vapour cloud, which for a pod kit is very impressive. 50W created a warmer and more enjoyable vape all round. I found anything above 50W was a little too warm for my liking although would probably be great for a menthol or ice based e-liquid.
SCAR-P3 RPM Pod - Meshed 0.4ohm Coil
The SCAR-P3 RPM pod comes with a the 0.4ohm mesh coil. Smok recommend 25W for this coil although I felt the flavour was a little lost at this setting. It was there, I could taste the profile of the Strawberry Jam but there was definitely signs for improvement.
Around 30W - 35W is where I found the best spot, for my liking anyway. The flavour comes out a lot more to create a mouth filling pleasant vape yet again much like the 0.16ohm coil with a little bit more restriction. Although saying that this coil is aimed towards the MTL vaping style, it was a little too airy for me and therefore enjoyed a slightly restrictive DTL vape from it.
I think because I'm so used to sub-ohm vaping I prefer a DTL vape with a lot more air in general, therefore the 0.16ohm coil performed better for my preference.
Refilling the pod on the SCAR-P3 is very easy thanks to the top mounted refilling hole. Although the rubber seal doesn't completely come out which can make refilling from a short fill a little harder, the seal is well fitting and I experienced no leaks throughout the testing. To refill the pod simply:
Overall the SCAR-P3 is a definite improvement on the RPM 2 series. Smok have clearly taken note of the IP67 capabilities and robustness from the likes of Geekvape and have created a strong competitor to their top leading Aegis pod kits. If you're looking for a strong and robust pod kit that's able to create excellent flavour then the SCAR-P3 could most definitely be the new kit for you.
Battery Life: 4/5
Pod Capacity: 3/5
TL;DR:The SCAR-P3 Pod Kit Is an Excellent All round Device with Utilisation of the Latest RPM 2 Pods. In Addition, the IP67 Waterproof/Dustproof Technology and Coating Created a Robust Device Throughout That Will Definitely Last, Especially with the Inbuilt 2000mAh Battery Which Will Keep You Going Throughout the Day. If Looking for an Upgrade I Don't See Any Reason to Not Pick Up the SCAR-P3!
